The Internet Celebrates As GameStop Announces Hundreds Of Store Closures

Following the rapid spread of coronavirus across North America, the US retailer, unlike other non-essential (supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, etc.) businesses, opted to continue operating in the middle of a global pandemic. Naturally, the company immediately found itself under intense scrutiny from critics online, with the overwhelming majority of social media users slamming the decision as irresponsible and potentially harmful. Not just for customers, but staff, too.
The outcry only worsened when an internal document sent to store managers was shared online. The memo instructed staff to tell any authorities that the decision to remain open was justified due to deeming the sale of video games as an “essential service.” Unsurprisingly, the backlash to such claims has been hostile, to say the least, though the retailer appears to finally be giving many cause to celebrate.
GameStop has confirmed that it plans to close 300 stores this year in a move, it says, is part of an ongoing effort to “de-densify.” As you might expect, given recent controversies, users over on Twitter are celebrating the news with glee.

We already know @GameStop is failing, they've been a joke for years now. The sad thing is, they are more than likely using this pandemic as one last cash grab and then will use it as a convenient excuse to close for good so they don't have to tell their employees the real reason.

@GameStop @gamestopcorp it is so sad you thought your stores are essential retail and that you care more about keeping stores open during a global pandemic than any of your employee's health. will never go into another location ever again. go out of business already #covid

Bye bye. Walmart is already selling games 10 bucks cheaper than GameStop. They're done.

As for the here and now, GameStop has remained steadfast in its decision to continue operating amidst the coronavirus outbreak, though has since made further changes to its temporary guidelines, including the introduction of contactless deliveries.
Trade-in and exchange services remain unavailable, however, with store opening times also reduced. Welcome safety measures, then, though in light of recent events, I imagine many will hold off on bringing their hands together in applause until GameStop caves to pressure and commences a full lockdown until the coronavirus crisis lessens.

All that place is is a place for trust fund babies from the suburbs to open up with their trust funds since they can’t invest in anything real

I truly don't understand how they stay in business. They have to compete with Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart etc..., who can all offer better prices. Does anyone really go there for new releases? They should really just shut down all of their stores and market themselves as an online retailer where you can buy retro consoles and games.

A lot of it is like I said before rich kids investing their trust funds in franchises because they have nothing else to do

Macy's set to close 14 stores nationwide. See list here

(more to follow)

Macy’s is set to close 14 stores as the historic department store chain continues to shrink its footprint across the United States.

“Macy’s, Inc. continues to execute its Bold New Chapter strategy, making targeted adjustments to its store footprint to better serve customers and support long-term growth. These actions allow us to reinvest in go-forward stores and digital capabilities,” the retailer said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY on Jan. 9.

The closures come as the company reported sales momentum as recently as December 2025. In a memo shared by Macy’s CEO Tony Spring that same month, the company said that its strategy is “delivering measurable progress.”

“We have made meaningful progress and remain clear-eyed about the work ahead,” Spring said. “We are seeing customers respond through strong performance in our go-forward business, record Net Promoter Scores, and improved results over the first three quarters.”

See below where Macy’s is closing stores:

SF fisherman's wharf restaurants DEMOLISHED

Jan 17, 2026
Alioto's Restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf is permanently closed and its historic building is currently being demolished to make way for a public plaza. After nearly a century in operation, the restaurant officially ended its lease with the Port of San Francisco in 2022.
Demolition of the landmark structure at 8 Fisherman's Wharf began in early January 2026. The Port of San Francisco plans to replace the building with a $10 million public plaza scheduled to open in the summer of 2026. This new space is designed to provide public views of the fishing fleet and the Golden Gate Bridge.
The decision to demolish follows years of unsuccessful attempts to find a new operator. Interested buyers were reportedly deterred by the building's massive size (11,000 square feet) and the multimillion-dollar investment required for necessary safety and seismic renovations
